Iowa Loses to Stetson, 9-6

DELAND, FL — The Iowa baseball team lost 9-6 at Stetson Tuesday night at Conrad Park. The Hawkeye offense erupted in the third inning, but was unable to win their third straight game. In the loss, Iowa falls to 5-8 and the Hatters improve to 9-9.

In the Iowa loss, Caleb Curry continued his hitting rampage, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Curry is 10-for-17 in DeLand. Kevin Hoef swung the bat well for the Black and Gold going 2-for-4 with a walk and Trevor Willis went 1-for-3 and scored a run.

The Hawkeye bullpen had another strong outing in the loss. The pitching staff included; Kyle Heim, Jason Belk and Andrew Porter. They pitched four innings allowing two runs on five hits and struck out five.

The Hatters got on the board first, scoring one in the second inning. However, the Hawkeyes came back strong in the third and took advantage of two Stetson errors. It started with a leadoff walk from Willis, followed by a Hoef single to left field. Matt Mossey continued things by hitting a ball in play, reaching on an error by the first basemen to load the bases. Justin Toole walked to bring Willis in and Curry singled to center to score Hoef and Mossey. Curry later stole second and advanced to third on an error by the catcher, on the error Toole scored. Tyson Blaser grounded out to second to score Curry to make it a 5-1 Iowa game.

The Hatters continued to hit the ball, scoring three in both the fourth and fifth innings, to claim a 7-5 advantage. The innings featured a Florio single to center and a DeGrom three-RBI double down the left field line.

Iowa scored in the sixth, to close within a run (7-6). It started with a Kurtis Muller single to right field, he later stole second. Blaser moved Muller to third with a fly ball to center and Kyle Riffel grounded out to the short stop to plate Muller.

Stetson added two insurance runs in the seventh. The inning featured a Bass RBI double down the right field line.

Iowa will take on the Stetson Hatters again Wednesday at Conrad Park. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. (CDT).
