Iowa Falls In Second Round At Big Ten Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN —The 57th-ranked Hawkeyes were eliminated from the 2008 Big Ten Women’s Tennis Championships this afternoon after a 4-0 loss to No. 21 Michigan. The seventh-seeded Hawkeyes advanced to today’s match after defeating Penn State 4-1 Wednesday evening, but could not overcome the second-seeded Michigan Wolverines today. Iowa is now 13-10, 3-7 this season.

Iowa lost the doubles point, giving Michigan an early 1-0 lead. The Hawkeyes duo of Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr were defeated by 44th-ranked Chisako Sugiyama and Tania Mahtani in an 8-1 loss at the number one position. After Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Kelcie Klockenga fell 8-4 to Lindsey Howard and Denise Muresan at the number three position, Michigan claimed the doubles point.

The Hawkeyes could not seem to find any momentum as they moved into singles competition. Klockenga was defeated at the number five singles spot and Dorr fell 6-2, 6-1 to Denise Muresan at the number three position to make the score 3-0 Michigan. The match point was decided at the number one singles position, where Lee put up a fight against 49th ranked Sugiyama, but was defeated in a 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) to decide the match.
