IOWA CITY–The Iowa baseball team dropped game one of today’s doubleheader against Ohio State at Duane Banks field, 12-2. In the loss, the Hawkeyes were held scoreless in six innings. The Black and Gold were doomed by three errors and a big fourth inning.
Caleb Curry led the Hawkeyes in game one going 2-for-3 with a walk and his 39th stolen base of the season. T.J. Cataldo went 1-for-1 with an RBI triple and a run scored. Zach McCool went 1-for-2, while Wes Freie went 0-for-1 with three walks. The three walks equal an individual single-game best for a Hawkeye this season.
Ohio State took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the second, and never looked back.
The Hawkeyes played catch-up in the bottom of the second, scoring two to close within 4-2. With two outs, Cataldo brought Kody McManis in with his fourth triple of the season. Kevin Hoef took advantage with Cataldo on third and drove him home with a single to center.
The Buckeyes added a run in the third, and broke the game open in the fourth with six to make it an 11-2 ballgame. Twelve Buckeyes were sent to the plate in the inning, scattering four hits and taking advantage of one Hawkeye error.
Playing in his last home series as a Hawkeye, senior David Conroy threw two solid innings of relief. He struck out three and allowed one run on two hits. Iowa starter Nick Erdman threw two and two third innings and got the loss, while Ohio State starter Dan DeLucia pitched five innings and earned his third win of the year.
Iowa will take on Ohio State at Duane Banks Field in the nightcap of the doubleheader tonight. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
