The University of Iowa sophomore Sonja Molnar finished her first day of competition at the ITA All-American Qualifying event with a 1-1 record.
Molnar fell to third seeded Kristi Boxx of Mississippi, 6-3, 7-6 in her first match, but played hard in the back draw to defeat Ana-Maria Constantineascu of Oklahoma, 6-2, 7-6.
“Sonja played really well in her first match,” said women’s tennis coach Mira Radu. “It was very tough competition with her opponent being the third seed in the whole tournament, but she played very well in a hard fought match. We’re excited for her win in the second match. Her win allows her to move on and compete tomorrow.”
Competition resumes tomorrow at the Riviera Tennis Club.
