This Week
The University of Iowa soccer team welcomes Purdue to the Iowa Soccer Complex for the final game of the season. The Hawkeyes and Boilermakers will kickoff at 7 p.m. Saturday night.
The Black and Gold will be honoring the senior members of the Iowa women’s soccer team prior to kickoff. Senior members of the 2010 squad include Kali Feiereisel, Jenna Aleo, Mandy Heimann, Keli McLaughlin, Stephanie Swanson and Amanda Martin.
Scouting The Opponents
Purdue is eighth in the Big Ten standings with a 2-6-1 record in league play. The Boilermaker attack is led by the double threat duo of Kellie Phillips and Katie Leinert with five goals each. Phillips has five assists, while Leinert has four.
Carianne Betts anchors Purdue’s defense in goal. The senior has made 81 stops this season in 18 games.
Veteran Head Coach Robert Klatte is in his 13th year at the helm. Klatte was the first ever head coach for women’s soccer at Purdue after he founded the program in 1997.
Last Week
The Black and Gold traveled to Michigan to face the Wolverines and Spartans, previously tied for fifth place in the Big Ten standings.
Friday night’s match in Ann Arbor started slow for Iowa, but the Hawkeyes rallied behind junior midfielder Morgan Showalter’s goal late in the game to put Iowa within reach. Head Coach Ron Rainey’s team put together several opportunities in the box, but No. 11 Michigan’s defense was able to hold on through the last 15 minutes of the game for the 2-1 decision.
Iowa stopped in East Lansing for the game Sunday afternoon. The Spartans were first to score with an early second half goal at the 59 minute mark, but Iowa was not deterred. Despite being out shot 22-10, the Hawkeyes found ways to make the most of their shots. At 78:33, sophomore Jade Grimm was able to net the equalizer after Michigan State’s goalkeeper mishandled a save. Senior Keli McLaughlin earned the assist after she worked inside the box to keep the ball alive.
Iowa’s defense was a brick wall through most of the game. Emily Moran, a junior goalkeeper, made an impressive 14 saves in the double-overtime thriller. Moran’s efforts earned her a place on a prestigious record list in Iowa’s books. The Kent, Ohio native ties for third in saves in a single match with Britta Vogele.
The Hawkeyes battled to a final score of 1-1 through two periods of extra time.
Wrapping Up 2010
Iowa welcomes Purdue University to Iowa City Saturday night for the final home game of the season. The teams will face off at 7 p.m. under the lights after honoring the senior memebers of the Iowa women’s soccer team.
The Hawkeyes (7-9-3, 0-7-2) face the Boilermakers (6-11-2, 2-6-1) for the consecutive year in the final match of the season. Last season the teams ended the season in thrilling fashion with an overtime battle that ended with Purdue on top 3-2.
Purdue leads the all time series 6-3-2.
Hawkeye Seniors
The women’s soccer team will honor the senior leaders of the Black and Gold next Saturday night when Iowa plays host to Purdue.
#1 Kali Feiereisel – Co-captain of the 2010 women’s soccer team. The goalkeeper from Libertyville, Ill. recorded 37 saves her during her freshman season and 25 during her sophomore campaign. Feiereisel is also a two time academic all-Big Ten honoree as well as a member of the Presidential Committee on Athletics.
#10 Amanda Martin – A native of Lewis Center, Ohio, has competed in 42 games for the Hawkeyes during her career. Martin has recorded three assists.
#16 Keli McLaughlin – A member of Iowa women’s soccer elite, etching her name into numerous record categories for her offensive efforts. The 2009 leading scorer from Alsip, Ill. has competed in 72 games for the Hawkeyes during her four years.
#21 Jenna Aleo – A co-captain of the 2010 women’s soccer team recently scored her first career goal in Iowa’s game against Indiana. The Tinley Park, Ill. native was named the Hawkeyes’ Most Valuable Player in 2009.
#22 Mandy Heimann – The Naperville, Ill. native is the final link to the trio of captains for the 2010 women’s soccer team. Heimann doubled her career assists in Iowa’s game against Indiana by earning assists on both of the Black and Gold’s goals.
#27 Stephanie Swanson – A goalkeeper from Downers Grove, Ill. Swanson has recorded 11 saves during her career at Iowa. The academic all-Big Ten honoree also recorded a shutout in her debut game as a freshman.
