Hawkeyes Fall At Illinois

IOWA CITY, Iowa–The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team hit the road after taking a break from competition for an intense training trip in Sarasota, Fla. The Hawkeyes traveled to Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini. Illinois defeated Iowa 174-126.

Iowa kicked off the meet with the 200 medley relay. Junior Daniela Cubelic, freshman Karolina Wartalowicz, senior Katarina Tour and junior Caitie Polz teamed up for the event. The quartet recorded a second-place finish with a time of 1:47.16.

Freshman Taylor Newgaard earned Iowa’s first first-place finish of the night in the 1,000 free. She posted a time of 10:24.87. Later on in the competition Tour collected another first-place finish for the Hawkeyes in the 100 breast (1:05.16).

Cubelic was the only swimmer to post two first-place finishes for the Hawkeyes. She earned her first victory in the 100 back with a time of 56.96. Cubelic went on to win the 200 back (2:05.30).

The Hawkeye divers collected victories for the team. Junior Veronica Rydze took first-place in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 300.15. She went on to place second in the 3-meter (319.43). Senior Deidre Freeman claimed first-place in the 3-meter with a score of 329.55 and placed second in the 1-meter (260.92).

The relay team of Cubelic, Hicks, Polz and freshman Emily Hovren concluded the meet with the 400 free relay. The team touched the wall in second with a time of 3:33.00.

The Hawkeyes return home Jan. 22 when they host Northwestern. The event is set to start at 11 a.m.
