BLOOMINGTON, Ill.- The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team competed in the first day of competition at the Big Ten Championships being held at Indiana University. Tonight’s session included two relay events and an exhibition competition in the synchronized 3-meter springboard.
Iowa kicked off the meet with a ninth-place finish in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of junior Daniela Cubelic, freshman Karolina Wartalowicz and seniors Katarina Tour and Caitie Polz touched the wall in 1:43.00. The team’s time ranks fifth overall on Iowa’s all-time top performers list.
The Hawkeyes went on to finish tenth in the 800 free relay. Freshman Emily Hovren, junior Daniela Cubelic and freshmen Emily Christiansen and Aiste Dobrovolskaite teamed up to record a season best time of 7:29.24.
Hawkeye divers Deidre Freeman and Veronica Rydze paired up to compete in a non-scored synchronized 3-meter springboard competition. The duo took first-place with a score of 266.76.
Iowa will continue at the Big Ten Championships tomorrow with prelims starting at 10 a.m. (CT) and finals kicking off at 5:30 p.m. (CT)
