Stanford, Cali. – Members of the University of Iowa women’s track and field team competed at the Stanford Invitational Friday. Seven Hawkeyes raced in the 5k, while four runners competed in the 1,500 meter run and one student-athlete ran the 3k steeplechase.
Leading the pack of Hawkeyes on the track was junior Danielle Berndt. The Bloomington, Minn. native posted a career best time of 10:51.21 to take seventh place in the race.
Senior Lauren Hardesty earned a place in the finals heat of the 1,500 meters. Hardesty clocked a 4:27.80, taking 14th.
Junior Betsy Flood ran a career best time of 16:16.41 in the first section of the women’s 5,000 meter run. Flood moved up Iowa’s all-time top performers list to fourth. The Des Moines, Iowa native, took 13th in the top flight of the finals race.
Junior Brooke Eilers paced the Hawkeyes in the 5,000 meter run. Eilers crossed the finish line in 16:29.47 to place fourth in the event and etch her name into the top-performers list at eighth. McKenzie Melander, All-American miler, posted a time of 16:30.63, a career best time and a ninth best performance in Iowa history.
Hannah Roeder, a senior from Des Moines, Iowa, ran a time of 17:12.36 in 5k, and senior Amanda Hardesty recorded a time of 17:14.77.
The Hawkeyes will be back in action next weekend at the LSU Invite, April 2.
