AUSTIN, Texas – The Hawkeyes completed day one of the Texas Relays and Texas State Invitational on Thursday evening. Sophomore Ryan Johnson took first place in the hammer throw in Austin.
Ryan Johnson clinched the victory in the men’s hammer throw with a mark of 70.23 meters. Joining Johnson on the leaderboard, junior Sean Smith secured fourth place with a heave of 63.65 meters. Rounding out the top ten for the Hawkeyes, sophomore Austin Busch finished in eighth place at 61.96 meters.
On the women’s side, sophomore Sydnie Smith placed fourth in the discus at the Texas State Invitational with a throw of 46.88 meters. In the men’s javelin in Austin, senior Drake Woody finished fourth with a throw of 56.34 meters.
The Hawkeyes also set several personal bests in the women’s 400-meter hurdles at the Texas Relays. Freshman Claire Kohler earned fifth place in the 400-meter hurdles open with a time of 1:02.18, while junior Isabelle Woody clocked in at 1:09.28, both setting new career highs. Junior Ellie Rickertsen also recorded a personal best, finishing the 400-meter hurdles invitational with a time of 1:00.83.
