CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Illinois, 7-4, Saturday night at Illinois Field. The game was televised live by the Big Ten Network.

Four Hawkeyes (Zach McCool, Mike McQuillan, Chett Zeise, Kurt Lee) recorded multi-hit games as the team tallied 12 hits. McQuillan, who leads Iowa with 11 multiple hit games this season, went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Zeise was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Tyson Blaser recorded a hit to extend his hit streak to nine games.

Iowa (12-16, 2-3) scored the first five runs of the contest and never looked back. The Hawkeyes tallied a run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Black and Gold pushed across three runs in the second. Iowa took advantage of four hits in the frame, including doubles by Bryan Niedbalski and Trevor Willis, to extend its lead to 4-0. The Hawkeyes added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by McQuillan, making the score 5-0.

Illinois (10-15, 2-3) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Fighting Illini scored two runs, cutting Iowa’s lead to 5-2.

The Hawkeyes answered in the following inning. With one away in the fifth, Zeise launched his second home run of the season to left, giving Iowa a 6-2 advantage.

In the ninth inning, the Hawkeyes added a run and Illinois tallied two runs, making the final score 7-4.

Matt Dermody earned his third win of the year. The sophomore starter pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out a career-high eight. Tim Fangman pitched the final two innings for Iowa.

Illinois starter John Anderson took the loss. He surrendered four runs on seven hits in three and two-thirds innings.

Iowa and Illinois will play the final game of the series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m.
