IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Iowa baseball team dropped the nightcap of today’s doubleheader against Indiana at Duane Banks Field, 6-0. With the win, the Hoosiers captured the series winning two of the three games. The Hawkeyes claimed game one of the doubleheader, 2-1.
“Our pitching was very good over the weekend,” said head coach Jack Dahm. “We did not swing the bats very well. We had some quality at-bats in the first game, but very few in the second game. Our pitchers are making progress, but we are unable to give them run support. We need to get back after it and we will.”
Indiana (23-12, 6-3) scored three runs in the top of the second to grab an early lead. The Hoosiers took advantage of three extra base hits with two away in the frame to make the score 3-0.
Iowa (13-20, 3-6) posted an offensive scare in the bottom of the seventh. The Black and Gold loaded the bases with a walk and two singles, but were unable to push across a run.
Indiana extended its lead with a single tally in the eighth and two more in the ninth to give the Hoosiers the 6-0 victory.
Patrick Lala started his first career game as a Hawkeye. The junior went a career-high six innings, yielding three runs on nine hits. He struck out a career-best six Hoosiers. Tim Fangman and Zach Kenyon saw action out of the Iowa bullpen.
Joey DeNato recorded his fifth win of the season for Indiana throwing eight scoreless innings, scattering four Hawkeye hits.
Iowa returns to action Wednesday. The Hawkeyes will travel to Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport to play Western Illinois. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. The Hawkeyes will then host Michigan next weekend in a three-game series at Duane Banks Field. Admission is $3 for adults, and free for UI students and youths.
