IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team completed the third and final day of the Hawkeye Invitational inside the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool Sunday night. After three days of competition, the Hawkeyes finished third out of eight teams with 629 points. Michigan won the invitational (980) and Denver placed second (632.5).
“We had some outstanding races in a quality field of competition,” said Head Coach Marc Long. “This was a great preparation as we prepare to race in and host the Big Ten Championships in February.”
Freshman Becky Stoughton kicked off the final day of the Hawkeye Invitational with the 1,650 free. After 66 laps, Stoughton cranked out a second place finish with a time of 16:28.18. The time surpassed the NCAA provisional time and ranks second overall in school history. Stoughton was just off the current school record (16:27.91), which was set by Melissa Loehndorf in 2001.
Danielle Carty posted a collegiate best time of 51.11 at the morning prelims session. Carty went on to place fourth at finals (51.25). Following the 100 free, Karolina Wartalowicz collected a collegiate best time in the 200 breast (2:16.89). The time ranks second on Iowa’s all-time top performers list.
In the last individual event of the night, Abbey Tuchscherer and Haley Gordon competed in the 200 fly. Tuchscherer recorded a second place finish with a time of 2:01.59. The time ranks second in school history and marks a collegiate best time. Gordon finished sixth in 2:04.00.
Iowa wrapped up the Hawkeye Invitational with the 400 free relay. The quartet of Carty, Heather Arseth, Emily Hovren and Stoughton posted a second place finish behind Michigan (3:19.99) with a time of 3:23.31. The time was an NCAA `B’ qualifying time and ranks seventh overall in school history. Carty’s lead leg time of 50.95 beat her previous best time in the 100 free, which she set earlier in the prelim session in the individual event. Her time (50.95) ranks sixth overall in school history.
Diver Lauren Kelba was Iowa’s only diver to compete in the platform diving event. She posted a fourth place finish with a score of 253.65.
The Hawkeyes return to action Dec. 9 when they travel to Ames, Iowa to take on Iowa State. The meet will begin at 6 p.m.
