EAST LANSING, Mich. — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team posted a 182-117 victory over Michigan State in its regular season opener Friday night at McCaffree Pool at IM West. The Hawkeyes won 12 events to improve to 1-0 on the season.
“It’s great to see a race after several months of hard training,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “Although it’s early on in the season, it’s great to walk away with a Big Ten win.”
The Hawkeyes claimed the victory in the 200 medley. Heather Arseth, Karolina Wartalowicz, Ashley Horodyski, and Olivia Kabacinski finished with a time of 1:46.26.
Becky Stoughton claimed the event title for the 1000 (9:58.55), Hillary Weigand finished as the runner-up with a time of 10:24.71.
Kabacinski posted two first place finishes in the 200 Free and 50 Free. Kabacinski finished with a time of 1:50.05 in the 200 free, out-touching Emily Hovren who placed second at 1:53.07. Kabacinski broke the pool record at McCaffree Pool, which is over 50 years old. She swam a time of 23.23, breaking a pool record (23.29).
Arseth picked up a pair of first place finishes in the 100 back and 100 free. Arseth touched the wall at 57.71 seconds to win the 100 back. Later on in the competition, Arseth claimed another first place finish when she swam a time of 51.61 to win the 100 free.
Wartalowicz posted two wins in the 100 breast and 200 breast. Wartalowicz touched the wall at 1:05.79 in the 100 breast, while sophomore Hannah Maher finished second with a time of 1:07.16. Wartalowicz touched the wall at 2:23.09 to claim a victory in the 200 breast, Maher swam a time of 2:24.37 to claim second place.
The Spartans were able to edge out the Hawkeyes in the 200 fly. Sophomore Audrey Kumm touched the wall at 2:07.66 to finish third behind the Spartans who placed first (2:06.27).
Lindsey Seemann claimed to victories in the 200 back and 400 IM. Seemann swam a time of 2:02.69 to win the event title in the 200 back, and took the top time in the 400 IM with a time of 4:26.15.
Kabacinski, Emily Hovren, Margaret Hofstadter, and Arseth placed first in the 400 free relay, finishing with a time at 3:28.16.
Emily Christiansen claimed a victory in the 500 free (5:08.65), out-touching Hillary Weigand who placed second with a time of 5:09.33.
The Spartains claimed the victory in the 100 fly, posting a first place finish (57.14). Audrey Kumm finished second, touching the wall at 57.39. Kabacinski, Emily Hovren, Margaret Hofstadter, and Arseth placed first in the 400 free relay, finishing with a time of 3:28.16.
The Spartans claimed took the victory in the 1-meter and 3-meter. Joelle Christy finished second in the 1-meter with marks of 242.85. Abbey Grilli claimed second place in the 3-meter dive with a score of 289.57.
The Hawkeyes return to action Nov. 2 when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn. to take on the Golden Gophers. The meet is set to start at 5 p.m.
