Hawkeye Invitational – Dec. 1 Results
IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa’s freshman Olivia Kabacinski won the 200 freestyle and posted the second fastest time in school history Saturday during the second day of the Hawkeye Invitational. The Hawkeyes currently sit in third place in the seven-team field with 404.5 points.
“It was a great night of swimming,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “We had more school records, and our divers did an excellent job, so we are happy with things. Olivia had another great night. We have more swimming and diving tomorrow, and we expect to really step up and continue to race hard.”
Michigan is leading the Invitational with 558.5 points, followed by Nebraska (453), Iowa (404.5), Northwestern (291.5), Denver (215.5), Washington State (209), Wisconsin-Milwaukee (167) and Notre Dame (88).
Kabacinski won Iowa’s first event title when she touched in 1:48.66, an NCAA “B” qualifying time in the 200 free. The La Porte, Ind., native swam the second fastest time in school history during the morning prelims, finishing in 1:48.32.
Junior Abby Grilli finished as the runner-up in the 3-meter springboard event with a collegiate-best score of 328.20. The point total is the fifth best in school history. Junior Joelle Christy was fifth in the same event with a personal-best 305.95, the eighth highest point total in the record books.
Iowa closed out the meet with a second place showing in the 800 freestyle relay. Junior Emily Hovren, sophomore Becky Stoughton, junior Lindsay Seemann and Kabacinski posted a time of 7:20.85, the third fastest time in program history.
The Hawkeyes opened Saturday night’s finals with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Heather Arseth, junior Karolina Wartalowicz, junior Abbey Tuchscherer, and Kabacinski posted a time of 1:41.89, the fourth fastest in the record books.
Wartalowicz and Kabacinski also advanced to the “A” final in the 100 breast, where they finished fourth and fifth overall. Wartalowicz posted a time of 1:02.85, while Kabacinski was fifth in 1:03.68. Both competitors swam season-best and top 10 times in the prelims. Wartalowicz’s 1:02.52 is the third fastest all-time, while Kabacinski’s 1:03.68 is the fifth fastest in school history.
Seemann touched the wall in 4:20.62 to finish fifth in the 400 IM in the “A” final. The Canada native posted the third-fastest time in the record books during the prelims, touching in 4:20.32.
Tucscherer posted a season best time during her fifth place swim in the 100 butterfly. She touched the wall in 55.35.
Freshman Maddie Bro swam a top 10 time in the 100 back during the morning preliminaries. The Ames, Iowa, native touched the wall at 56.66, a time that ranks as the eighth-best in school history.
