WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams finished 10th and 12th, respectively, at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Sunday. The event was held at the Boilermaker Cross Country Course on the campus of Purdue University.

Kevin Lewis paced the Hawkeyes in the men’s 8,000-meter race. The junior clocked a time 25:03.9 to finish 26th. Freshman Quentin Shaffer recorded a personal best time of 25:34.3, earning a 59th-place finish. Junior Ben Witt (25:39.6) and freshman Kevin Docherty (25:43.8) finished 64th and 67th, respectively, while Caleb Wilfong (81st; 26:02.6) rounded out the scoring. The Hawkeyes tallied 275 team points.

“We had been making progress and developing into a good team, but we definitely took a step back today,” said men’s head coach Larry Wieczorek. “We lost to teams that we had previously beaten. It was our worse race of the season, and it happened to be our most important meet so far. Now, we have to recover and get ready for the NCAA Regional.”

Courtney Martin was the top finisher for the Hawkeyes in the women’s 6,000-meter race. The sophomore crossed the line in 22:53.4 to finish 78th. Freshman Katie Adams (23:04.8) and Rachel Price (23:08.3) finished 82nd and 83rd, respectively, while freshman Tess Wilberding (23:10.9) finished 86th. Shannon Maser crossed the line in 23:17.5 to finish 90th. The Hawkeyes posted a team score of 369.

The Hawkeyes travel to Ames, Iowa, for the NCAA Regional on Nov. 15.
