CLEMSON, S.C. — The University of Iowa women’s rowing team concluded Clemson Invitational action Sunday morning in Clemson, S.C. Due to inclement weather, session two, originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, began Sunday morning with session three following immediately after.

“The second day here was certainly better than our first overall,” said head coach Andrew Carter. “I think our two varsity 8+’s bounced back from a pretty dodgy start yesterday, while our 4+’s improved on what I thought was a solid day one. The first session of the morning was much more reflective of where we are and I was quite pleased that our crews were able to show that.

“Today’s conditions were pretty rough. It really blew out there in the final round of racing with very strong winds coming across the course. Unfortunately, the draw had most our crews on the far side of that, which made things pretty challenging. For the most part, our crews handled it quite well but the 2V8+ took a bit of a beating by Mother Nature and was just this side of swamping in their last race. It was a bit of a survival session.”

The Hawkeye 1V4+ and 2V4+ boats finished with back-to-back first place finishes with times of 8:01.40 and 8:05.40, respectively. The 1V4+ boat beat Duke by six seconds (8:07.60) and the 2V4+ boat defeated Michigan State by four seconds (8:09.80).

The Hawkeyes began session two with the 1V8+ race and placed sixth with a time of 7:05.30, one second ahead of Oklahoma (7:06.30). No. 19-ranked Cornell won the race with a time of 6:51.50, two seconds ahead of No.17 Louisville (6:53.90).

In the 2V8+ race, Iowa placed third in 7:10.80, four seconds ahead of Oklahoma (7:14.80). Louisville finished first in 7:04.40, while Dartmouth took second in 7:10.50, barely edging out the Hawkeyes.

Iowa’s 3V8+ boat took fifth with a time of 8:14.00, edging out Michigan State by two seconds (8:16.60) and Cornell by nine seconds (8:23.40). Penn finished first with a time of 7:44.70 and Louisville took the runner-up spot with a time of 7:51.50.

The final session of the invite began as the Hawkeyes’ 1V8+ boat finished sixth in 7:26.40,an early one second ahead of Miami (7:27.30). Oregon State won the race in 7:08.80 and No.13 Harvard finished second in 7:11.20.

Iowa finished the invite with the 2V8+ race and finished sixth in 8:11.50, defeating Duke (8:15.00) by three and a half seconds. Harvard took first in 7:35.60, while Oregon State took second in 7:49.40.

Session three was cut short due to unsafe weather conditions.

The Hawkeyes return home to host their final home regatta of the season against Big Ten foe Minnesota on Sunday, April 27. The regatta will begin at 8 a.m. (CT) at Lake MacBride in Solon, Iowa.
