IOWA CITY, Iowa — The 43rd-ranked University of Iowa men’s tennis team blanked IUPUI and finished Friday by winning a tight match over No. 40 Denver, 4-2, at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
The win over Denver is Iowa’s fourth win over a ranked opponent this season (No. 70 Utah State; No. 47 Cornell; No. 65 Wichita State; No. 40 Denver).
The day started strong with Iowa easily taking the doubles point from IUPUI and cruising into singles where every match was won in straight sets.
In the nightcap against Denver, the Hawkeyes won two huge doubles matches to clinch the point. Iowa’s Lefteris Theodorou and Jake Jacoby beat 31st-ranked Henry Craig/Alex Gasson, 6-4, at the No. 1 position, while Dominic Patrick and Josh Silverstein topped 56th-ranked Diogo Rocha/Yannik James, 6-2, in the second spot.

After two tough losses at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, Silverstein picked up momentum for the team with a big win over David Fox, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Jacoby kept the Hawkeyes rolling with a 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Jesse Ruder-Hook to regain a 3-2 advantage in the match.
At the No. 4 spot, junior Robin Haden battled Alex Gasson to clinch the match point for Iowa. The native of Sweden finished the match in a three-set decision, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-4.
The nationally-ranked Hawkeyes, who improved their overall record to 7-2, travel to Des Moines next Friday to face the 44th-ranked Drake Bulldogs.
