IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa volleyball team (6-4, 0-0) fell to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (10-1, 0-0), in four sets on Friday night inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Sophomore Courtney Buzzerio paced Iowa with 15 kills, junior Brie Orr tallied 41 assists, and junior Halle Johnston added 18 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (25-18) | Iowa allowed Coastal Carolina to get out to an early lead in the first set. Iowa was forced to take a timeout trailing 6-12. Iowa’s comeback attempt began with a kill from sophomore Courtney Buzzerio and an ace from freshman Joslyn Boyer. After trading a couple service errors, Iowa trailed the Chanticleers 13-16, but that was as close as Iowa got. Coastal Carolina closed the set on a 4-0 run.

SET 2 (25-14) | Iowa came back in a big way in the second set, taking an 11-4 lead thanks to kills from sophomores Hannah Clayton and Amiya Jones. Freshman Edina Schmidt tallied her first career kill and rallied off another kill and ace in a huge momentum swing for the Hawkeyes. Iowa finished the set on a 10-6 run.

SET 3 (25-20) | After halftime adjustments for both sides, Iowa and Coastal Carolina appeared evenly matched through the first five points, but the Chanticleers gained the advantage after capitalizing on a couple Hawkeye errors. Iowa closed the gap to trail by only two points at 22-20 to force a Coastal Carolina timeout after Schmidt’s second ace of the night.

SET 4 (25-16) |The Hawkeyes ran out of steam in the fourth set, trailing 3-7 before calling their first timeout. Iowa continued to struggle against the Chanticleers for the duration of the set, falling behind 12-20. A short run toward the end of the set gave the Hawkeyes hope, but Coastal Carolina shut the door on any comeback attempt by the Hawkeyes.
