IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa volleyball team (9-21, 3-16) fell to Ohio State (15-16, 8-11) in four sets on Friday night inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Sophomore Courtney Buzzerio led Iowa with 14 kills, freshman Emma Lowes had a career-high 26 assists, and junior Halle Johnston added a team-high 20 digs.

HEAR FROM COACH BROWN
“Courtney had another double-digit kill match with 18 assists. Kyndra (Hansen) had a good match, getting into double digits so I liked what she did as far as working through the last couple weeks. The one thing we have to work on is maintaining momentum and playing as a full unit instead of compensating for others.”

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (25-23) | The Hawkeyes opened fast in the first set, taking a 5-3 lead off a kill from freshman Blythe Rients. Iowa extended its lead to 15-8 as Ohio State took its first timeout. The Buckeyes stormed back to bring the score to 16-14 and Iowa was forced to call its first timeout. An Ohio State service error gave the Hawkeyes breathing room as they did not allow Ohio State to tie the score and the Hawkeyes took the first set by a score of 25-23.

SET 2 (25-19) | Iowa and Ohio State were evenly matched in the second set, tying at each point until Iowa got out to a 13-11 lead. Iowa began to take a commanding lead at 16-12 after a kill from freshman Kyndra Hansen until the Buckeyes fought back to tie the score at 18. Iowa called a timeout, but Ohio State maintained its momentum and won the second set, 25-19.

SET 3 (25-11) | Following the intermission, the Buckeyes had full control of the match, taking a 10-5 lead and then opening it up to 20-11. Iowa couldn’t muster another point for the rest of the set and fell 25-11.

SET 4 (25-19) | Iowa fell into another hole to start the fourth set as Ohio State took a 6-3 lead. Sophomore Amiya Jones tallied a kill as Iowa looked to continue the rally, but Ohio State stopped the Hawkeye attack and got out to a 14-6 lead. Iowa called a timeout. The Hawkeyes notched a kill out of the break thanks to Buzzerio, but kills were few and far between as the Buckeyes stretched their lead to 12-20. Hansen reenergized the Hawkeyes with a kill as Iowa made a late push to tie the score, but with Ohio State sitting on match point, a single kill was all they needed to secure the match.
