IOWA CITY, Iowa — The players kept playing, the coaches kept coaching and in the end, University of Iowa football kept winning.
The Hawkeyes (5-2) overcame a 14-0 deficit and scored 35 straight points to defeat Illinois, 35-21, on Dec. 5 in Champaign, Illinois. It was the fifth win in a row for No. 19 Iowa.
Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz touched on topics ranging from field position to special teams play to senior day in his Sunday sit-down with hawkeyesports.com.
Overcoming Early Field Position Woes
“Our (fourth) possession we started on the 25-yard line, and that was the best field position we had to that point, so it’s not a good sign. If you get bad field position, what you have to do is try to flip the field, you have to get make a couple first downs and move the ball out to at least the 30, 40 yard lines where you can flip the field with a good punt.
“We weren’t able to do that. We were basically three-and-out, three-and-out, and didn’t get much going. The best thing that happened was our players kept playing, the coaches kept coaching and things started getting better.”
