Hawkeyes Wrap Busy Weekend in The Golden State

ONTARIO, Calif. – University of Iowa track and field wrapped up a busy weekend in California on Saturday, with competition at the Mt. SAC Relays in Ontario and the Beach Invite in Long Beach.

At the Beach Invite, sophomore Paige Magee ran a lifetime-best (58.26) in the 400-meter hurdles and moved to seventh all-time on Iowa’s top-10 list, finishing third.

“It was definitely a redeeming day for her and that group,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “It was great to see Paige have a breakthrough day. She’s had a heck of a weekend, this was her fifth event of the weekend so I was really proud of her.”

The men’s 400-meter hurdle group had a strong day, putting four Hawkeyes in the top eight. Junior Julien Gillum was runner up (51.62) and sophomore Drake Woody (51.64) finished third. Senior Raymonte Dow (52.36) was fifth and freshman Nathan Farrell ended in eighth (52.29).

“It was good for the guys to get another rep in,” Woody said. “The races didn’t go quite as well as we hoped yesterday, but they all came back and had a really good day today. It was good to see Julien [Gillum] and Drake [Woody] come back and be mid 51s. All of these guys are becoming more consistent. They all came back and fought hard today.”

Freshman Kalil Johnson was the top-finisher for the Hawkeyes in the 110-meter high hurdles, finishing fifth with a personal-best time (14.06). Sophomore Myreanna Bebe ran a wind-aided time (13.14w) to finish third, Magee finished 11th (13.52w) and freshman Miya Brines was 20th (13.95w).

Sophomore LaSarah Hargrove finished eighth in the final of the 100-meter dash (11.38) at the Mt. SAC Relays after running 11.37 on Friday to qualify.

“She ran great, she just didn’t quite get to that extra gear we normally see from her,” Woody said. “I’m excited to get home for our kids to get rested up and be closer to home the next couple weeks.”

Junior James Carter, Jr. finished sixth in the triple jump elite section (15.58m / 51’1.5”). The final Hawkeye event at the Mt. SAC Relays was the women’s 4×400-meter relay, and the quartet of junior Mariel Bruxvoort, seniors Erin Dowd and Payton Wensel and freshman Tesa Roberts ran a season-best time of 3:35.08 – fourth-fastest ever at Iowa.

“They competed very well,” Woody said. “That group built off of their performance last week, and I think we have a 3:32-3:30 team there, it’s just a matter of having them all split fast at the right time. I think we’ll see that in the coming weeks.”

Junior Maria Gorham was the runner-up in high jump at the Beach Invite (1.71m / 5’7.25”). Junior Elijah Barnes finished fourth in the shot put (17.97m / 58’11.5”), while sophomore Dawson Ellingson was sixth (17.50m / 57’5”). Sophomore Jordan Johnson posted a sixth-place finish in discus (55.99m / 183’8”).

The Hawkeyes head home to host Musco Twilight next Saturday in Iowa City.
