Hawkeyes Wrap Up Day One at Big Ten Invitational

SARASOTA, FL – The University of Iowa rowing team competed in the Big Ten Invitational on Friday at Nathan Benderson Park. The field consisted of No. 19 Alabama, No. 6 Brown, UCLA, UCF, No. 2 Duke, No. 20 Indiana, RV Iowa, No. 13 Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, No. 11 Ohio State, Rutgers, No. 15 SMU, Stanford, No. 18 Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

The morning session consisted of 1V8, 2V8, 3V8, 4V8, 1V4, 2V4, and 3V4.  The Hawkeyes took Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, and Wisconsin to task in the first segment of the invitational.

Iowa’s top placements of the morning came in the 1V8, 1V4, and 3V4. In the Varsity Eight, the Hawkeyes beat their immediate competitors by a full three and a half seconds. Iowa had the most top placements from teams within in the Big Ten Conference with three. Ohio State had a pair and Indiana/Michigan State had one each. In the 1V8 and 1V4 the Hawkeyes topped units from No. 18 Tennessee and No. 19 Alabama.

The afternoon session saw the squads of 1V8, 2V8, 3V8, 4V8, 1V4, 2V4, and 3V4. Iowa battled against Duke, Michigan, Indiana, Rutgers, and SMU in the second segment of the invitational.

The top performing crew was 4V8 with a time of 7:36.75 to finish second behind Indiana and on top of Rutgers by a full 0:15.26 seconds.

There were five Hawkeye squads that finished in third place. 1V8 finished with a time of 6:31.49, 2V8 finished with a 6:45.69 time, 3V8 had a 7:29.02 time, 2V4 finished with 7:35.22, and 3V4 anchored with a 7:46.35.

1V4 Iowa battled against UCLA for the third spot but fell short by 01.16 to finish in fourth place with a time of 7:25.94.

Weather for Friday’s events was fair with warm weather, but the wind swirled and was changing directions throughout the day.
