DURHAM, N.C. – The nationally-ranked University of Iowa rowing team competed in the Lake Wheeler Invitational on Friday. The field consisted of RV Alabama, Boston College, RV Boston University, RV Clemson, No. 14 Duke, Georgetown, Kansas, Louisville, Miami (FL), Navy, North Carolina, Oklahoma, No. 8 Penn, No. 9 Syracuse, RV Tennessee, UCF, and Washington State.
The morning session consisted of 1V8, 2V8, 3V8, 1V4, and 2V4. The Hawkeyes took Kansas, Miami (FL), Navy, Penn, and UCF to task in the first segment of the invitational.
Iowa’s top placement of the morning came in the 3V8 which was the first race of the morning for the Hawkeyes. In the third Varsity Eight, the Hawkeyes beat their immediate competitors by a full two seconds. Iowa finished second to No. 8 Penn in the four of the five races in the morning session.
The Hawkeyes battled Boston, Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, Penn, Syracuse, and Washington State in the afternoon session. The invite consisted of the same events as the morning segment. Iowa’s top placements came in the V8, 1V4, and 2V4 boats finishing second to No. 9 Syracuse. The Hawkeyes and Syracuse battled over a month ago in the B1G/Ivy League Dual. Iowa’s times have improved drastically since then, making up nearly 20 seconds in margin of finish.
The weather for Friday’s competition was partly cloudy and 82 degrees with 5-15 mph wind out of the south creating a headwind.
All five of Iowa’s boats will compete tomorrow morning against Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Miami (FL), Oklahoma, and Washington State. The Hawkeyes will return to the water for the third session at approximately 6:35 a.m. (CT).
QUOTING HEAD COACH JEFF GARBUTT
“Overall, I thought we performed very well in both sessions as a team. In the morning the conditions were great but the wind shifted on us a bit in the afternoon creating a headwind. With the limited time we’ve had on the water that can cause frustration but our group did a great job of handling that. I was also super proud of our freshmen picking their first victory in the 3V8. We’re excited to be here and are gearing up for tomorrow.”
