GENEVA, Ohio – Six University of Iowa wrestlers placed at the 2023 U23 and U20 World Team Trials presented by Wrestlers in Business Network at the Spire Institute.
Incoming Hawkeye Gabe Arnold was runner-up at 79 kg, Aiden Riggins was fifth at 74 kg, Jace Rhodes was sixth at 61 kg and Bradley Hill finished seventh at 125 kg in the U20 Division. In the U23 bracket, Cullan Schriever (61 kg) and Caleb Rathjen (70 kg) both finished third.
Arnold was runner-up at 79 kg after dropping a best of three final to Matthew Singleton of the Wolfpack Wrestling Club. Singleton won 6-1 in the first match, Arnold evened things up with a 2-2 win in match two, but Singleton earned spot on the Junior World Team with a 5-4 win in the decisive third match.
Schriever and Rathjen both advanced to the semifinals at 61 and 70 kg in the U23 bracket.
Schriever, the top seed, cruised, posting three straight tech falls and a decision to advance to the semifinals. After dropping a 7-1 decision to Julian Chlebove in the semifinal bout, the Mason City, Iowa, native posted back-to-back technical falls to finish third.
In seven matches in the tournament, Schriever outscored his opponents, 77-11.
Rathjen followed suit at 70 kg, rolling into the semifinals as the No. 1 seed with three tech falls and a decision. After dropping an 11-8 decision in the semis, Rathjen followed with a decision and tech fall to finish third. He outscored opponents, 77-25, in seven bouts.
Riggins went 2-2 with a technical fall in the fifth-place match to place fifth, Rhodes went 1-3 at 61 kg to finish sixth and Hill went 2-2 with a tech fall and fall to place seventh at 125 kg.
