CORALVILLE, Iowa — Nine University of Iowa wrestlers advanced to the finals at the Soldier Salute on Saturday afternoon at Xtream Arena.
Four Hawkeyes earned bonus points in the quarterfinals, including Brody Teske, Jared Franek, Michael Caliendo and Patrick Kennedy.
Caliendo and Kennedy will square off in the 165-pound finals; Caliendo is ranked seventh at 165 while Kennedy is 15th at 174 pounds.
Kennedy has earned a pin, a technical fall and a major decision through three bouts at the Soldier Salute. Caliendo used a tech. fall to advance past Blaine Brenner (Iowa State) in semifinals, 19-4.
Four Hawkeyes defeated ranked opponents during Session III. Drake Ayala downed #20 Patrick McKee (Minnesota), 5-4, coming back to win in the third period.
Top-ranked Real Woods defeated #18 Josh Koderhandt (Navy), as Zach Glazier won a top-20 matchup of his own against #19 Garrett Joles (Minnesota). Woods will face #5 Lachlan McNeil (North Carolina) in the final.
Caleb Rathjen also picked up a victory in the semifinals against teammate Victor Voinovich III, who is ranked eighth at 149.
The Solider Salute concludes with Session IV, starting at 5 p.m. (CT). The action will be streamed live on BTN+.
