TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Iowa track and field opened the weekend strong at the Jim Click Shootout and Multi’s on Friday hosted by the University of Arizona.
Multiple Hawkeyes climbed the leaderboard in the multi-events. Sophomore Sal Capaldo sits in fifth place in the men’s decathlon with 3,339 points. The Polk City, Iowa, native is 177 points back from the lead in his decathlon debut at Iowa.
Capaldo opened his day with a third-place result in the decathlon 100-meter dash, racing 10.54 to claim 966 points He also took third in the decathlon high jump, jumping 1.95 meters (6’ 4.75”).
In the women’s heptathlon, freshman Annie Wirth is in fifth place with 3,342 points, and sophomore Isabelle Woody has 2,578 points in 18th place.
Wirth tied for first in the heptathlon high jump, leaping 1.76 meters (5’ 9.25”). The rookie’s indoor personal best was 1.79 meters (5’ 10.5”) in the high jump.
Seven Iowa throwers competed on day one. Senior Drake Woody threw 56.67 meters (192’ 6”) to claim fourth place in the men’s javelin. Woody’s personal best in the event is 56.68 meters set in 2022 at the Baldy Castillo Invitational.
Sophomore Walker Whalen posted a personal record in the men’s hammer throw, tossing a mark of 51.78 meters (169’ 10”). Whalen took 15th place, while teammate Sean Smith took sixth place throwing 63.64 meters (208’ 9”).
