TULSA, Okla. – The third-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated No. 16 Missouri, 34-3, on Saturday morning in the first round of the National Duals Invitational at the BOK Center.
“We have to be ready,” said head coach Tom Brands. “They got under our elbows a couple times. Keep being ready, have to be ready for that style. We need to score points, that is the number one thing, score points and keep scoring.”
The Hawkeyes kicked things off at 125 pounds with true freshman Leo DeLuca making his Iowa debut, winning 2-0 over No. 28 Mack Mauger.
At 133, No. 2 Drake Ayala pinned 20th-ranked Kade Moore in 3:57 before No. 9 Nasir Bailey picked up a ranked win at 141 over No. 19 Zeke Seltzer, 2-0.
Ryder Block got the nod at 149 pounds for the Hawkeyes and upset sixth-ranked Josh Edmond via a 2-1 decision in tiebreakers.
“Felt good,” said Block. “I need to just keep shooting leg attacks and getting to the legs and then hopefully I will start converting more on takedowns. Everything else felt good. I know I am good on top, I can ride in the room and I know I am in better shape than these guys so just have to keep them down and finish the ride hard.”
No. 11 Jordan Williams won an 8-1 decision over Seth Mendoza at 157 before second-ranked Michael Caliendo earned bonus points at 165 with an 11-3 major decision over No. 13 Maxx Mayfield.

“The coaches have me prepared,” said Endene. “The guys on the team have me prepared, just following the leaders of our team and doing what I need to do to be on their level and achieve my goals. The coaches know the goals I have that are set high, and they do everything in their power to get me there.”
