No. 3 Hawkeyes Fall to No. 6 Cyclones, 20-14

The third-ranked Iowa wrestling team fell to No. 6 Iowa State, 20-14, in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series on Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.

AMES, Iowa — The third-ranked Iowa wrestling team fell to No. 6 Iowa State, 20-14, in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series on Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones won six matches and scored bonus points in two bouts to Iowa’s one.

“I look at it like we have work to do,” head coach Tom Brands said. “We will keep doing the work. I’m not sure that we failed in critical moments. I think that we can get better, and we have the guys to get better.”

The dual opened at 285 with No. 1 Yonger Bastida earning an 11-4 decision over No. 6 Ben Kueter. Kueter escaped late in the third period to prevent bonus points.

In a rematch from last year’s NCAA tournament, No. 7 Dean Peterson defeated No. 9 Stevo Poulin at 125, 4-2.

At 133, No. 6 Evan Frost upset third-ranked Drake Ayala, 11-5, before No. 6 Anthony Echemendia scored a major decision over No. 7 Nasir Bailey, 15-2.

No. 10 Ryder Block sent the dual to the break with an upset over No. 2 Paniro Johnson in tiebreakers, 2-1. Block escaped in three seconds to secure the win.

No. 3 Vinny Zerban added bonus points for Iowa State at 157, defeating No. 12 Jordan Williams, 11-3.

Second-ranked Michael Caliendo used six takedowns in the 165 bout to record a technical fall, defeating No. 22 Connor Euton, 20-5.

No. 1 Angelo Ferrari forced a stall call in the third period and edged No. 10 Issac Dean, 2-1.

Second-ranked Rocky Elam closed out the dual with an 8-2 decision over No. 4 Massoma Endene.
