No. 8 Hawkeyes Down Spartans, 40-6

The eighth-ranked Iowa wrestling team rolled past Michigan State, 40-6, on Sunday afternoon.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The eighth-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team rolled past Michigan State, 40-6, on Sunday afternoon at Jenison Field House.

The Hawkeyes won nine of 10 bouts with seven earning bonus points, Iowa ended six matches early via technical fall. 

“Lot of bonus points,” head coach Tom Brands said. “Gotta love that. Solid, more importantly. You get bonus points because you are solid. Nothing reckless or silly or goofy, but a lot of power. Staying in their best positions, that’s what we have to have. Keep that going. We are going Friday night, quick turnaround. Every day, every hour, progress. That is where we are at.”

No. 6 Dean Peterson opened the dual at 125 pounds with a 12-2 major decision over Nick Corday.

At 133, No. 9 Drake Ayala sparked a run of three straight tech. falls with a 21-4 victory over Caleb Weiand. Kale Petersen followed at 141 with a 17-2 tech. fall over Sean Larkin, and No. 18 Ryder Block capped the stretch at 149 with a 21-5 tech. fall against Clayton Jones.

“I had a tough match Friday,” Petersen said. “I just regrouped and got tough, pushed the pace, got myself tired and scored a lot of points.”

Victor Voinovich III added a 7-3 decision over Darius Marines at 157 pounds, sending Iowa into the intermission with a 22-point lead.

After the break, third-ranked Michael Caliendo earned a first-period tech. fall, 22-4, over DJ Shannon at 165 pounds. No. 3 Patrick Kennedy followed with a 19-4 tech. fall against Connor O’Neill at 174.

Gabe Arnold kept the bonus-point surge going at 184 with a 20-4 tech. fall over Ryan Boucher. 

Michigan State’s lone points of the afternoon came at 197 pounds, where No. 23 Kael Wisler received a forfeit.

No. 8 Ben Kueter closed the dual at heavyweight with a 7-1 decision over Josh Terill.
