Joel Welsh, Jr. is in his fifth year as a strength and conditioning assistant coach at the University of Iowa.  He served as an intern with the Iowa football program during the 2011 summer.

The Hawkeyes posted a perfect 12-0 regular season record in 2015, winning the West Division of the Big Ten Conference.  Iowa participated in the 2016 Rose Bowl following a last-minute loss to Michigan State (16-13) in the Big Ten championship game and ended the season in the top 10 in the national rankings. 

Iowa has participated in January bowl games the past three seasons, including the 2014 Outback Bowl, the 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl and the 2016 Rose Bowl.  The Hawkeyes have ranked in the final top 10 of both major polls five times in the past 14 seasons.

Welsh served as a graduate assistant at Springfield College in 2011-12.  At Springfield he designed and implemented programs for football, men’s volleyball and men’s and women’s tennis.

Joel was the strength and conditioning coordinator at Queens College in New York from 2007-10, where he designed and implemented programs for all 15 varsity teams.  He worked as an intern at Fordham University during the winter in 2010.

Welsh is certified through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa), is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and certified sports performance coach from the United States of America Weightlifting (USAW).

Welsh earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2010 from Queens College and his master’s degree (M.Ed.) from Springfield College.

Welsh was born May 17, 1987, in Bronx, New York. Joel and his wife, Mara, have a son, Roman.
