Hughes Tabbed Honorary Captain

Sept. 18, 2003

Former all-Big Ten Conference wide receiver Danan Hughes has been named this week’s honorary captain for Iowa’s football game against Arizona State. Kickoff is 5:05 p.m., Saturday and a limited number of tickets remain for the contest in Kinnick Stadium.

Hughes will be with the Hawkeyes on the sidelines and will join the Iowa captains for the pre-game coin flip at mid-field.

A 6-2, 200-pounder from Bayonne, NJ, Hughes was a four-year letterman (1989-92) and graduated as Iowa’s all-time leading receiver. Tim Dwight surpassed his career mark in 1997. Hughes, now second on Iowa’s all-time receiving charts, caught 146 passes for 2,216 yards and 21 touchdowns. He and Dwight are tied for Iowa’s all-time touchdown reception record (21). Hughes played in the 1991 Rose Bowl and the Holiday Bowl the following season.

Hughes, a multi-sport star, was also a starting outfielder for the Iowa baseball team. The Milwaukee Brewers selected him in the 1992 baseball draft. Hughes was also a seventh-round draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL. He played with the Chiefs and the New Orleans Saints in a six-year NFL career (1993-98).
