The Bowl Game

More About Iowa Football

Gone.

UI Athletic Department officials announced today that only a limited number of “singles’ remain available for purchase through the UI Athletic Ticket Office from its allotment of 16,000 for the 2006 Outback Bowl.

Coach Kirk Ferentz’s squad will square off against Florida on Jan. 2 in Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The game is the fourth straight January bowl game for the Hawkeyes. Iowa will be seeking its third straight win over a Southeastern Conference team in the post-season.

“We’re very pleased and not at all surprised by the response from our fans,” said David Sandstrum, the UI’s director of ticket operations.

Sandstrum said that fans interested in purchasing tickets should consider giving the UI Athletic Ticket Office a call if they are willing to barter a little with their neighbors in the stadium on game day.

“As Kirk and others have said often, our fans are fantastic. They are excited and they are supportive and they can’t wait to have another opportunity to cheer this football team.”

“Many of the singles are back-to-back. Some are separated by rows if not seats. It’s possible that a fan could negotiate with other fans about seat location once they get into the stadium.”

UI officials expect between 25,000 and 30,000 fans of the Hawkeyes to find their way to Tampa.

“That’s a pretty good rule of thumb for us given the fact that so many Iowans and fans of the Hawkeyes spend a good chunk of the winter in Florida. Many of those fans simply purchased directly through the bowl game or through Ticketmaster,” said Mark Jennings, the UI’s associate athletics director for patron services.

Fans of the Hawkeyes who plan to follow the team to Tampa are reminded that the Official Outback Bowl Hawkeye Huddle will be staged on the evening of New Year’s Day (Jan. 1) at the Tampa Convention Center.

Iowa’s success with ticket sales to 20th anniversary edition of the Outback Bowl marks the fifth straight bowl game that the UI has exhausted its ticket allotment. The string includes the 2001 Mastercard Alamo Bowl, the 2003 FedEx Orange Bowl, 2004 Outback Bowl, 2005 Capital One Bowl and this year’s game.

“As Kirk and others have said often, our fans are fantastic. They are excited and they are supportive and they can’t wait to have another opportunity to cheer this football team,” said Sandstrum.
