Box Score

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa softball team picked up a 2-0 win over Western Illinois in its final home game of the 2008 season Wednesday night. Iowa improves to 36-17 on the season.

Iowa plated the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior Colleen McGlaughlin singled and was lifted at first for junior Callie Adreon, who moved to second on an Erin Riemersma walk. Junior Quinn Morelock then hit a soft line drive to second and Riemersma, who was running from first to second, shielded the Westerwind second baseman and the ball rolled to the outfield. Adreon hustled around from second on the play to score the first Hawkeye run. On the next play, Morelock attempted to steal second and forced a rundown, which allowed Riemersma to score from third.

The Westerwinds threatened in the top of the seventh, but Iowa managed to get the win. Iowa allowed a runner to reach on an error followed by a double to put runners on second and third with only one out, but two pop-ups to freshman Chelsey Carmody at second ended the game.

Morelock finished 2-3 with an RBI while four other Hawkeyes had one hit.

Junior Brittany Weil tossed her 23rd complete game and 10th shutout of the season. Weil gave up only two hits and struck out six with no walks. She retired the first eight batters of the game before allowing a hit and then sat down the next 10 batters before the error in the seventh inning. Weil also struck out the side in the sixth.

The Hawkeyes will wrap up regular season play this weekend at Illinois. The two-game series will begin Friday at 6 p.m.
