The University of Iowa women’s tennis team was successful in Tallahassee Saturday. The doubles competitors went 5-1 overall, posting three wins over Auburn and two over Florida State.
“We had a really good day today. We played very high quality and high energy doubles matches and everybody competed really well. The team won close matches against good competition,” Mira Radu said. “We rose to the occasion and played smart to win. It was cold and windy all day, but both doubles and singles fought hard and played high quality tennis today.”
Iowa’s duos faced Auburn and Florida State. Sonja Molnar and Lynne Poggensee-Wei defeated Chifchieva/Molenvela of Auburn, 9-7 and Segarelli/Rybakova of FSU, 9-7. Merel Beelen and Zuzi Chmelarova recorded a wins against Thorton/Schippers of Auburn, 8-1, and Davidson/Sucupira of FSU, 9-7. Jessica Young and Kelcie Klockenga split today. The duo posted a win over Hastenruth/Korteva of Auburn, 9-7, and fell to Suess/Sargeant of Florida State, 9-7.
Molnar, Young and Klockenga were all victorious in singles competition. Molnar defeated Seredni of FIU, 6-2, 1-6, 10-8. Young posted a win over Vallasciani of FIU, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, and Klockenga downed Holt of FIU, 6-0, 6-3.
Matches will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow for the final day of singles competition at the Seminole Quad Tournament.
