GREENSVILLE, S.C. – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team completed the first day of action at the Furman Fall Classic in Greensville, S.C., on Friday.
Competing for the first time as a Hawkeye, freshman Aimee Tarun earned a victory in both singles and doubles play. Tarun defeated Majilena Pedersen of Florida State, 6-4, 7-5, in her lone singles matchup in the Flight Five Singles bracket Friday.
“The caliber of this tournament is going to make us better,” said head coach Katie Dougherty. “We competed well at spots today but inconsistently across the board. Aimee had a great first collegiate win and we have a lot to improve on going into tomorrow.”
Tarun also teamed up with junior Ellen Silver in the Flight Three Doubles bracket. The duo was defeated by Florida State’s Majilena Pederson and Laurence Porry, 8-7. Tarun and Silver bounced back in the second round where they defeated Carola Pederzani and Ani Miao of Clemson, 8-3.
The Hawkeyes return to the Mickel Tennis Center tomorrow at 8 a.m. (CT) for the second day of competition.
