IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving closed out the 2013 Hawkeye Invitational on Sunday, finishing in fourth place with 436 points.
“I’m really proud of them and how they raced. There were so many good races and so many good performances this weekend,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “We have set ourselves up well for the second half of the season, but I really thought this was a great meet with some great competition.”
Notre Dame claimed the Invitational title, accumulating 823 points, followed by Boise State (742.5), Nebraska (462), Iowa (436), Denver (415), Washington State (387.5) and Milwaukee (226).
The Hawkeyes used a strong day two as momentum heading into the final day of competition, and the results were there from the start. Two Hawkeyes posted NCAA `B’ cut times, with both times ranking in the top 10 of in program history.
Sophomore Olivia Kabacinski swam to a school record in the 100-free during prelims. Her time of 49.48 is the first sub-50 time in program history. Sophomore Colleen Champa swam to the second-fastest time in team history, touching out in 2:14.50 in the 200-breast.
Iowa posted a pair of `B’ cuts, both of which came in the 200-breast. Champa swam to a fourth place finish in the event (2:14.31), while senior Karolina Wartalowicz finished in sixth in 2:15.93.
Sophomore Calli Head won the platform title in the diving well, doing so in record-setting fashion. Head won the title with a final score of 265.60, which is a new five-dive school record.
Back in the main pool, Kabacinski finished second in the 100-free final, touching out in 50.08. Senior Lindsay Seemann posted a season-best time in the 200-back when she finished sixth during the finals in 1:59.03.
In the final event of the evening, the Hawkeyes swam to a sixth-place finish in the 400-free relay. The quartet of junior Becky Stoughton, senior Emily Hovren, Kabacinski, and senior Elise Borja touched out in 3:24.55.
The Hawkeyes return to action Friday, heading to Ames, Iowa, to face Iowa State as part of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. Competition is slated to begin at 6 p.m. (CT) inside the Beyer Hall Pool.
