OAK RIDGE, Tennessee — The University of Iowa rowing program competed in the Tennessee Invitational Conference Challenge on Melton Hill Lake this Sunday, facing representatives of three of the nation’s strongest conferences. The Hawks lined up against Clemson of the ACC, UCF of the AAC, and Tennessee as an affiliate member of the Big 12.

rowingThe weather was nice, with temperatures in the mid-60s and little to no wind.

The Hawkeyes swept the 8+ events and crossed in the runner-up position in the 4+’s

“It went pretty well, I think the novice eight did a particularly nice job,” said third-year head coach Andrew Carter. “They executed and handled the course and competition very well. I also saw some good improvement in some of the areas we’ve been working on in practice. This crew is continuing to improve and I expect that to continue as we make final preparations for the B1G Championship.”

The Novice 8+ led off the racing at 6:40am when they shot off the line ahead of the 3rd Varsity crews from Clemson, Tennessee, and UCF. The Hawks edged their bow in front in the first few strokes and continued to stretch that lead over the entire course, crossing nearly 11 seconds of the runner-up from

“The Novice eight, how their race unfolded was very mature. Basically from stroke one they showed their quality in the field and methodically stretched their lead over the full 2000 meters,” said Carter. “There never seemed to be a point at which they were content with their lead, every stroke seemed to give them a little bit more advantage.”

The 2V and 1V fours went off in the thick of the program. Both crews got off slower-than-normal starts, which seemed to hurt them at later stages. The 2V paid the price early and were and a boat-length down by the 750m mark. Clemson took advantage and continued to improve on that lead in the next 1250m. The 1V4+ worked their way back to the front of the field but the effort may have been too much as the Tigers pressed them aggressively and managed to get on terms in the third 500m. There was not much in it between the two crews for the next 250m when Clemson got their nose in front for good.

The two Varsity 8+’s anchored the racing and both crews led from start to finish. The 2V cruised down the course at a powerful 34 strokes per minute, never allowing the charges from Clemson rattle them. The Tigers never went away but their efforts couldn’t do what was necessary to overcome the Hawkeye lead.

The 1V took a different approach, coming off the line at a blazing 43 stroke per minute and striking an aggressive 37 over much of the course. Their efforts put them in front early and they never looked back. After some jostling for the lesser positions, UCF emerged in the middle section of the race to challenge the Hawks over the third 500m and even into the final quarter. The Iowa Varsity wasn’t having it as they pushed back out to an entire boat-length during their finishing sprint.

Iowa will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana, in two weeks to compete in the Big Ten Championships on May 14-15.
