BELGRADE, Serbia – Former University of Iowa wrestler Thomas Gilman claimed a silver medal at 57 kg at the Senior World Championships on Saturday at Stark Arena.
The former Hawkeye All-American lost to Albania’s Zelimkhan Abakarov, 7-2, in the finals.

Gilman rolled to the championship bout with wins of 11-0, 5-1 and 8-2. He defeated wrestlers from Australia, Mongolia and China.
The world silver adds to Gilman’s freestyle resume. He has also won a 2017 world silver, a 2020 Olympic bronze, a 2021 World Championship. As a Hawkeye, Gilman was a three-time All-American and a 2017 Big Ten champion.
