MINNEAPOLIS– The University of Iowa women’s soccer team fell to Minnesota,1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
Iowa controlled possessions early in the first half, as graduate student Caroline Halonen helped get things going with a pair of shots to the top of the net from inside the box in the 21st minute.
The Gophers found the net in the 24th minute, however, as defender Gabbie Cesarone fired a goal off the corner kick.
The Hawkeyes went to work in the second half, producing eight of their 12 shots on the afternoon in the second period.
Senior Hailey Rydberg led the offensive effort, recording seven shots on the afternoon including three shots on goal. Rydberg entered the game ranked second in the Big Ten Conference in shots; the team captain from St. Charles, Illinois, now has 50 shots on the season.
Goalkeeper Macy Enneking was back in goal for the Hawkeyes for just the third game this season. She came up with four saves on the day.
The Minnesota defense ultimately held firm, snapping Iowa’s two-game winning streak against the Gophers.

“Today’s game was a fairly even contest with both teams missing some quality chances they created. The difference in the game, unfortunately, was the set piece that Minnesota scored on. More disappointing was how it was scored, and when: immediately upon us missing two excellent chances at the other end. But, that’s how cruel the game of soccer can be. The fight continues to be shown by the team, but that search to be more efficient in both boxes is still needed.”

- 90 TRACKER: Sara Wheaton (11), Samantha Cary (8), Cassidy Formanek (6) and Rydberg (5) each played all 90 minutes of Sunday’s game. Seven Hawkeyes have played the entirety of at least one contest this season, including Brooklyn Woods (3), Josie Durr (3) and Rielee Fetty (2).
