Senior Day Shutout

IOWA CITY, IOWA – The 17th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team dominated UC Davis, 5-0, on Senior Day on Friday afternoon at Grant Field.

“It was a much-needed victory today, just for the team to get momentum back after a couple close losses,” said head coach Lisa Cellucci. “I’m so proud of this group of women, they have been through a lot here in this program. A lot of massive accomplishments, really successful moments, big games, final fours, and Big Ten Championships. They mean so much to us, but I’m just so proud of the women they are, the students they are, and the teammates they are. I’m so glad they could enjoy a great day at Grant Field.”

The Hawkeyes were first on the board with Dionne van Aalsum‘s goal at 8:57 in the first quarter, assisted by Annika Herbine.

Iowa continued to top UC Davis in the second quarter, when Lieve van Kessel scored at 26:24 off an assist from Sabrina McGroarty.

The Hawkeyes protected their turf in the third quarter with three goals. First came Tess Reed‘s unassisted shot at 34:31. The lead continued to extend with a goal from Alex Wesneski at 41:04 assisted by A. Herbine, and another at 42:34 by Lexie Haig, assisted by Jacey Wittel.

Iowa outshot UC Davis, 30-to-4 and had 11 penalty corners to UC Davis’ five. Mia Magnotta had two saves for Iowa in the shutout win.
