Hawkeyes Sweep Jewell Duals

The top-ranked University of Iowa women's wrestling team went five-for-five in the Jewell Dual Tournament on Saturday

LIBERTY, Mo. — The top-ranked University of Iowa women’s wrestling team went five-for-five in the Jewell Dual Tournament on Saturday with two wins over No. 25 William Jewell and victories against No. 7 Lindenwood, Fort Hays and Missouri Baptist. The Hawkeyes hold a 9-0 dual record this season.

The Hawkeyes defeated tournament host William Jewell, 44-0, in their first dual of the day. There was a double forfeit at 103 pounds, and the Hawkeyes accepted forfeits at 110, 117, 124, 138, 160 and 207. Emmily Patneaud took the mat for Iowa at 131 pounds, pinning Alanis Cedeno in 29 seconds. Top-ranked Reese Larramendy followed with a 10-0 tech. fall over Haylie Briscoe at 145 pounds before No. 8 Naomi Simon capped off the dual with a 27-second pin over Camryn Aikanoff at 180.

Iowa defeated No. 7 Lindenwood, 40-6, in its second dual. The Hawkeyes forfeited the 103-pound match to give Lindenwood an early 6-0 lead, but it was all Iowa after that. Second-ranked Ava Bayless and first-ranked Brianna Gonzalez earned tech. falls at 110 and 117 pounds, respectively. Iowa then accepted forfeits at 124 and 131 pounds to go up, 22-6. At 138 pounds, No. 3 Nanea Estrella pinned Marissa Sanabria in 28 seconds. Macey Kilty earned a tech. fall over No. 10 Rebecca Strong at 145 pounds, and Larramendy followed with a tech. fall against Alana Duggan, wrestling up at 160. Top-ranked Kylie Welker defeated Makayla Rivera via fall at 180 pounds, and No. 1 Jaycee Foeller closed the dual with a 6-2 win over No. 3 Sara Lake at 207.

The Hawkeyes continued with a dominating win, 41-7, over Missouri Baptist. Iowa forfeited the 103-pound match. Emilie Gonzalez started the action with a 10-0 tech. fall over Andrea Karagiannis at 110. After Iowa accepted a forfeit at 117 and then Cali Leng cruised to a, 12-2, victory against Makayla Murray at 124. Patneaud kept the Hawkeyes rolling at 131 pounds with a pin over Chloe Herrick in 1:44. At 138, Cadence Diduch made her collegiate debut, defeating Cara Cheng by tech. fall, 10-0. Larramendy won by forfeit at 145 before Kilty earned her second tech. fall of the day at 160 pounds, this time over Josette Partney. Simon followed with a fall over Emma Schreiber in 49 seconds, and then Foeller pinned Abigail Chandler in 1:39 to secure the Hawkeyes’ third dual win of the day.

Iowa battled Fort Hays in its fourth dual and prevailed, 36-1. Both squads forfeited at 103. Bayless and Brianna Gonzalez put Iowa on the board with back-to-back pins. Leng and Emily Frost followed with back-to-back decisions at 124 and 131. The Hawkeyes then rattled off three straight tech. falls with Estrella at 138, Kilty at 145 and Larramendy at 160. To finish it off, Welker pinned Isabella Renfro in 1:22 at 180, and Foeller beat Hailey Conley, 11-0, at 207.

Iowa ended its tournament run with a 34-2 rout of William Jewell. After an Iowa forfeit at 103 pounds, Emilie Gonzalez clinched a 13-7 win over Miyah Palacios. Brianna Gonzalez followed with a dominant 10-0 tech. fall over No. 8 Alexandra Waitsman at 117 pounds. Leng finished her day with a tough 3-1 victory over Emarie Bolosan at 124. At 131, Patneaud battled en route to a, 7-0, win against Shelby Kemp. Diduch, Larramendy and Kilty each earned 10-0 tech. falls at 138, 145 and 160 pounds, respectively. Simon secured her third fall of the tournament with a pin in 1:32 over Nylease Yeager. Foeller closed out Iowa’s trip with a 11-0 tech. fall against Peyton Welt.

There were some really hard fought bouts and it was great to see the support that the team showed for whoever was out there competing on the mat.”
