CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s wrestling team went 2-0 on day one of the NWCA National Duals at the UNI Dome. The Hawkeyes recorded six pins and eight technical falls against Aurora and Wartburg.
First-seeded Iowa opened the day with a, 35-10, win over Aurora. Second-ranked Sterling Dias started the dual at 103 pounds with a 3-2 victory against Genesis Ramirez. Fifth-ranked Emilie Gonzalez followed with a 10-0 tech. fall over Muia Moore at 110 pounds. At 117, top-ranked Brianna Gonzalez pinned Sharon Moreno in 1:17 to continue her undefeated season. Emily Frost secured a headlock and pinned Natasha Markoutsis in 2:22 at 131 pounds to keep momentum on Iowa's side. The Spartans picked up wins at 124 and 138 to stay within strinking distance. First-ranked Reese Larramendy recorded an 11-0 tech fall over Olga Turiy at 145 pounds. At 160 pounds, second-ranked Kennedy Blades made her National Duals debut and defeated Antonia Phillips, 12-0. Seventh-ranked Naomi Simon pinned Mackenzie Konanz in 2:39 at 180 pounds before Sam Calkins closed out the dual by accepting a forfeit at 207 pounds.
The Hawkeyes closed out day one by beating eighth-seeded Wartburg, 42-1, in the quarterfinals. Iowa accepted forfeits at 103 and 110 pounds to start the dual. Brianna Gonzalez earned her second fall of the day at 117 pounds, pinning Danielle Silva in 1:17 to give Iowa a 15-0 lead. At 124 pounds, Cali Leng battled until the final whistle to defeat Liannette Ortiz, 6-6. Emmily Patneaud followed at 131 pounds and pinned Khylie Wainwright in 1:41. Third-ranked Nanea Estrella took the mat at 138 pounds, beating Alli Russler, 12-0. At 145, third-ranked Macey Kilty earned a 10-0 tech. fall over Dana Cleveland, and then Blades followed suit defeating Rachel Schauer, 11-0, at 160 pounds. Top-ranked Kylie Welker dominated Kami Senlycki, 10-0, at 180 pounds, and fifth-ranked Alivia White prevailed over ninth-ranked Rewa Chababo, 4-0, at 207 to finish the day.

"The thing that I love about duals is that we get to see how we can support each other as a team. We had a couple of hard losses in the dual against Aurora but we did a good job of being able to move forward and lift eachother up. We fought hard today and were able to build momentum and saw it pay off in the second dual against Wartburg. We are looking to carry that into tomorrow against a very good McKendree team."
