IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field’s Chioma Nwachukwu earned Big Ten Women’s Freshman of the Week honors, the league announced on Wednesday.

Nwachukwu had an incredible weekend at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic finishing the 400-meter race in 52.46, a personal record and the fourth-fastest time in Iowa history. Nwachukwu is currently the top-ranked freshman in the country in the event.

The freshman from Asaba, Nigeria, was also a part of the 4x400 relay team that broke Iowa’s school record with a time of 3:30.42. Nwachukwu, along with Alivia Williams, Damaris Mutunga and Olicia Lucas, now hold the fifth-fastest time nationally.

It is Nwachukwu’s second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor this season. She joins Pauline Bikembo and Damaris Mutunga as Hawkeyes to earn Big Ten Women’s Freshman of the Week awards this year. It is the fifth time a Hawkeye has won a Big Ten weekly award, marking the most in program history for a single indoor season.

Nwachuckwu and the Hawkeyes return to action this Friday and Saturday with competition at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invite, Jarvis Scott Open, Robinson Family Open and Tyson Invitational.
