LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Iowa track and field team concluded day three of competition at the Tom Jones, Bryan Clay, Mt. Sac and Kansas Relays Friday afternoon. Juniors Lizzy Korczak and Wisdom Williams collected event wins in the javelin and shot put, respectively.
“We had another very good day of competition across the country today,” Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “It was great to finish the day with two more Kansas Relay champions in Wisdom and Lizzy in the women’s shot put and javelin. Even though they didn’t have their best performances from the season, they both competed well to come out with the victory.”
“In Florida, I was very pleased with Holly’s (Duax) race in the 200-meter open. She came away with a huge lifetime best and beat some great athletes in the field. Lia (Love) also executed a great race, it was just unfortunate that they ran into a tough headwind in her heat. She is really putting together some great races and I’m excited to see her race the 100 meter and 4x100-meter relay tomorrow,” Woody added.
In the women’s shot put, Williams recorded a 15.98-meter toss to secure the gold. In the women’s javelin, Korczak hit the 50.80-meter mark to finish first for the Hawkeyes.
At the Tom Jones Invitational, junior Holly Duax clocked a personal-best 23.50, ranking seventh all-time at Iowa and securing a fifth-place finish.
In the women’s 400-meter hurdles invite, sophomore Ali Frandsen achieved a lifetime best of 59.00, which ranks 10th all-time at Iowa. Junior Ellie Rickertsen secured sixth (1:00.20) in the 400-meter hurdle open, while freshman Claire Kohler picked up a personal best (1:00.88) and ninth-place finish. On the men’s side, junior Jaylin Holmes came away with a personal-best 51.36.
“I was very pleased with our 400-meter hurdles tonight,” Woody said. “Ali led the women with a big personal best and just missed running 58” for the first time. Claire competed extremely well and is very close to running 59”. Ellie ran another great race right off of her personal best. She’s been the most consistent this year so far and is very close to a big breakthrough. The guys all ran really well in the 400-meter hurdles with a big personal-best by Jaylin Holmes. Nick ran a good clean race and was right off his personal best tonight. It was fun to see Zidane run his first 200 meter in an Iowa uniform and come out with his second fastest time ever.”
At the Mt. Sac Relays, freshman Jeanne Le Goff claimed the bronze with a personal best and seventh all-time finish of 12.67 meters in the women’s triple jump.Sophomore Maud Zeffou-Poaty collected the silver in the women’s long jump, hitting the 6.31-meter mark.
“Maud led our team at the Mt. Sac Relays today, finishing second in the long jump and came out with an all-conditions personal best, just barely over the legal wind limit and just missed first place by 1 centimeter,” Woody said.
Note: Elena Torres, Clare Kelly, Jalyssa Blazek and Carson Lane will be competing in the 1,500 meters at the Bryan Clay Invite later tonight. The women’s 1,500 meters will begin at 11:50 p.m. (CT) and the men’s 1,500 meters will begin at 12:15 a.m. (CT).
