No. 1 Hawkeyes Sweep For Her Duals

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The top-ranked University of Iowa women's wrestling team collected four wins on Sunday, defeating Ursinus, No. 17 William Jewell, No. 2 McKendree, and William Penn (No. 3 NAIA). In total, the Hawkeyes registered five falls and 18 technical falls. 

#1 IOWA VS. URSINUS
At 103 pounds, Sterling Dias got the win over Madeline Gavares with an 11-0 technical fall. She was followed by Emilie Gonzalez at 110 pounds, who secured the 10-0 technical fall over Olivia Guy.

No. 5 Brianna Gonzalez got the win by fall over Aubree Butler at 117 pounds. Following at 124 pounds, Isabella Marie Gonzales got the 8-2 decision over Kalli Roskos.

No. 1 Karlee Brooks secured the win at 131 pounds over Stacy Bloomfield with a 4-2 win by decision. Wrestling up a weight at 138 pounds, Bella Williams got the 10-0 technical fall over Paisley Fox.

No. 1 Kylie Welker got the 10-0 technical fall over Jurelys Peguero Del R at 180 pounds. Then, closing out the first dual at 207 pounds, No. 5 Jaycee Foeller accepted the forfeit for the Hawkeyes. 

#1 IOWA VS. #17 WILLIAM JEWELL COLLEGE
No. 1 Valarie Solorio kicked things off for the Hawkeyes with a 9-4 decision over Juliana Alejandro. She was followed by No. 3 Nyla Valencia at 110 pounds, who secured the 10-0 technical fall over Emily Mendez.

At 117 pounds, No. 6 Alexandra Waitsman secured three team points for William Jewell with the 10-7 decision over Brianna Gonzalez. Following at 124 pounds, No. 7 Cali Leng picked up the 10-0 technical fall over Jada Hernandez.

Williams (131 pounds) continued the momentum with a 10-0 technical fall over Shelby Kemp. At 138, No. 2 Skye Realin notched the win by fall at 2:16 over Zainab Ibrahim.

At 145 pounds, No. 1 Reese Larramendy dominated with an 11-0 technical fall over Daphanee Miller.  Wrestling up two weight classes, senior Ella Schmit battled, securing an 8-5 decision against Paige Barber.

Welker made her way to a 10-0 technical fall over McKinzie Ross at 180. Closing out the dual at 207 pounds, Katja Osteen finished strong with a 10-0 technical fall over Desiree Hall in just 38 seconds.

#1 IOWA VS. #2 MCKENDREE
At 103 pounds, No. 2 Heather Crull got McKendree on the board early with a fall at 2:06 over No. 1 Solorio. Iowa answered right back at 110 pounds, as Emilie Gonzalez secured the 10-0 technical fall over Emma Cabinian.

At 117 pounds, Ava Bayless continued the momentum for the Hawkeyes with a 10-7 decision over Kiona Conner. No. 7 Cali Leng followed at 124, delivering a big-time fall over Gabriella Gomez.

McKendree battled back, securing a decision at 131 and a fall at 138. Larramendy, the top-ranked wrestler at 145, got the Hawkeyes back on track with a dominant 10-0 technical fall over Haylie Jaffe. At 160 pounds, Schmit fell to No. 2 Savannah Gomez by fall, giving McKendree a 19-17 lead. 

At 180 pounds, No. 1 Welker stayed perfect with an 11-0 technical fall over No. 3 Destiny Rodriguez. Osteen, a senior, sealed the 24-19 victory for the Hawkeyes with a 5-0 decision over Rylee Ferranti at 207. 

#1 IOWA VS. (NAIA #3) WILLIAM PENN
Sterling Dias opened the dual strong for Iowa with a 10-0 technical fall over Lillian Zapata. At 110 pounds, Mia Palumbo earned the win over Valencia by injury default. 

At 117 pounds, NAIA's No. 1 Christianah Ogunsanya put William Penn on the board with a 10-0 technical fall over Bayless. Iowa responded at 124 pounds as Isabella Marie Gonzales secured a win by fall over NAIA's No. 4 Victoria Baez Dilone.

Brooks continued Iowa’s momentum at 131 pounds with a 13-2 technical fall over NAIA No. 6 Kendall Bostelman. William Penn followed with a win by decision at 138 pounds. 

At 145 pounds, Larramendy dominated with a 10-0 technical fall over Maeley Elsbury. Schmit followed with a strong performance at 160, earning the win by fall over Kylee Eastwood.

At 180 pounds, Welker added another win for the Hawkeyes with a 10-0 technical fall over Piper Fowler. Osteen sealed the night with a 10-0 technical fall over NAIA No. 9 Phoebe Burt.

“We talked about little wins, no matter what, regardless of if your hand gets raised at the end. There are little wins within the match itself. So it was great to put those together to complete that, and just provided the opportunity for so many of our women to be able to compete.”
