EUGENE, Ore. – University of Iowa’s 4x400 relay team of Alivia Williams, Damaris Mutunga, Princess Uche and Chioma Nwachukwu crushed the program’s school record en route to a first-team All-America finish on Saturday night at Hayward Field.
The Hawkeyes finished fifth overall in 3:25.10, surpassing the previous school record by nearly two seconds (3:26.90 in 2025). The quartet ran 3:27.21 on Thursday night, which, at that moment, was the No. 2 time in program history. On Saturday, the group shaved over two seconds off of its time to earn the fifth-place finish. After collecting first-team All-America honors for the first time in program history in 2025, Iowa now has back-to-back honorees in the event.
“These women ran amazingly well tonight,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Every leg fought the entire race and competed so well. I couldn’t be more proud of those four and all of our alternates who ran on that relay at some point this season to help us get to this meet.”
Alivia Williams ran the leadoff leg in 52.92 to get the relay started. Damaris Mutunga flew around the oval in a speedy 49.84 split to lead the Hawkeyes. After Mutunga completed her trip around the track, she gave way to Princess Uche, who split 51.54. Chioma Nwachukwu capped the race with a 50.82 to secure Iowa’s second top-eight finish in the women’s 4x400 relay at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in as many years.
“Alivia got out great and brought the stick home strong to get us into the top five teams,” Woody added. “Damaris ran an incredible second leg and was moving so fast the last 50 meters as she set up Princess for the third leg. Princess ran a terrific leg in a lot of traffic and brought it home to give Chioma the stick in fourth place to set her up on anchor. Chioma got out super aggressive and just went for it down the backstretch. She got all the way up to third place and held on for a strong close to finish fifth overall, while breaking our school record by almost two seconds in a very competitive relay.”
