Hawkeyes Defeat #24 Delaware State, #3 Presbyterian at Yorktown Throwdown

Charleston, S.C. – The second-ranked University of Iowa women’s wrestling team earned two wins on Saturday at the first day of the Yorktown Duals, defeating #24 Delaware State and #3 Presbyterian. 

#2 IOWA VS #24 DELAWARE STATE
At 103 pounds, Sterling Dias defeated Sydney Branch by technical fall, 10-0. Maintaining the momentum at 110 was No. 7 Emilie Gonzalez, who picked up a 9-0 decision over Ariah Mervilus. 

Second-ranked Brianna Gonzalez recorded a first-period fall in 2:23 over No. 8 Icart Galumette at the 117-pound weight class. At 124, Harlee Hiller notched a 13-3 technical fall over Sophia Slaughter. 

At 131, Emily Frost secured a 12-1 technical fall over Naima Rodriguez, while No. 2 Lilly Luft dropped a 12-3 decision to Willow White at 138 pounds. 

Nora Akpan responded with a ranked upset of her own, taking down seventh-ranked Louise Juitt via decision, 7-3. Cadence Diduch got the win by decision over Chloe Williams at 160, 7-2. 

Top-ranked Kylie Welker made her season debut at 180 pounds and posted a technical fall, 10-0, over Azariyah Johnson in 26 seconds. Closing out the dual at 207 pounds was Libby Dix, who fell to Deionna Borders 5-3.

Maddie Niewenhuis got things started for the Hawkeyes at 103 pounds, beating Anna Maralit by technical fall, 11-0. Following at 110, Isabella Marie Gonzales defeated Anna Ockerman by fall in 2:03. 

In her second ranked matchup of the day, No. 2 Brianna Gonzalez took down No. 5 Jenna Anderson by a 3-2 decision at 117 pounds. In the 124-pound weight class, Harlee Hiller defeated Camdyn Elliot via technical fall, 13-0. 

At 131 pounds, Emily Frost recorded an upset victory over fifth-ranked Alyssa Mahan, pinning Mahan in 38 seconds. No. 2 Lilly Luft then lost to Zoe Griffith at 138 pounds by fall in 5:54. 

No. 1 Reese Larramendy extended the lead with a 10-0 technical fall over Kassey Daugherty at 145 pounds. Brooklyn Hays then dominated third-ranked May Cuyler at the 160-pound weight class, winning by technical fall, 11-0. 

At 180 pounds, No. 1 Kylie Welker secured the win over Isabella Gretzinger via technical fall, 10-0. Wrestling up a weight class at 207, Naomi Simon capped the dual off with a fall over Grace Leota in 2:27.
