Brock Sherman

Brock Sherman is in his first year as a senior analyst/assistant special teams coordinator with the University of Iowa football program, marking his seventh year overall with the Hawkeyes. Sherman served as a special teams analyst from 2023-25 and as a special teams assistant from 2020-22.

Iowa won 23 combined games over the last three seasons, capturing the Big Ten West Division title in 2023 and winning the 2025 ReliaQuest Bowl with a 34-27 triumph over No. 14 Vanderbilt. The Hawkeyes have been ranked in the final AP Top 25 in six of the last eight seasons, including a No. 17 ranking following a nine-win 2025 campaign.

The Hawkeyes have recorded 36 Big Ten wins between 2020 and 2025.

Iowa’s special teams units have consistently performed at an elite level, and recent seasons were no exception. Return specialist and consensus All-American Kaden Wetjen became the first player to win the Jet Award in back-to-back seasons after leading the country in combined kick return yardage in 2024 and 2025. A two-time Rodgers-Dwight Big Ten Return Specialist of the Year, Wetjen averaged 26.8 yards per punt return in 2025 to establish a new NCAA benchmark. Wetjen is the only player in Big Ten history to record three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown in the same season (2025), and the only player in the country to log both a kickoff and punt return touchdown in both 2024 and 2025. 

Kicker Drew Stevens (2022-25) broke the school record for most career field goals (76) and field goals made from 50+ yards (12). He finished his collegiate career with four game-winning field goals. Stevens also etched his name into the record book by converting a 58-yard field goal against Oregon in 2025, tying the Iowa and Kinnick Stadium records.

Iowa’s kickoff return defense has ranked in the top 20 nationally in four of the last five seasons, including sixth in 2025 (15.08 yards per return) and eighth in 2023 (15.57).

The Hawkeyes won 10 games in 2021, winning the Big Ten West Division title and advancing to the conference championship game. Iowa concluded that season with an appearance in the Citrus Bowl and finished ranked No. 23 in the final AP Poll.

Following back-to-back narrow losses to open the 2020 season, Iowa won its final six games, all in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes were ranked 15th in the final CFP rankings and Coaches Poll, and 16th by the AP.

In 2023, Iowa ranked first in the country in net punting (44.2), fourth in blocked punts (2), and eighth in kickoff return defense (15.6). Punter Tory Taylor and return specialist Cooper DeJean were each recognized as unanimous consensus All-Americans. Taylor became the first Hawkeye to win the Ray Guy Award, presented annually to the nation’s top punter. Taylor set NCAA single-season records in 2023 for most punt yards (4,479) and highest punting average (48.2 yards per punt on a minimum of 75 punts). He also finished his career with the highest punting average in NCAA history (46.3). 

In 2022, the Hawkeyes ranked among the top three in the conference in punt returns, kickoff returns, punt return defense, and kickoff return defense. Iowa ranked third in the Big Ten and 15th nationally in net punting, while ranking second in the conference and 19th in the nation with three blocked kicks. 

Iowa’s special teams in 2021 ranked among national leaders in kickoff return defense (14th), kickoff returns (17th), and punt return defense (18th). Charlie Jones ranked second in the nation in combined kick return yards, while Taylor finished 12th in the country in punting average (46.1). 

Iowa’s special teams played a key role in its 2020 success as well. Taylor was named the Big Ten Punter of the Year, earned First-Team Freshman All-America honors from the FWAA, was named Second-Team All-America by The Athletic, and was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award. Iowa led the Big Ten and ranked fifth nationally in net punting (42.9) in 2020, while also ranking fifth in the nation in kickoff return coverage (15.7). 

Sherman played linebacker for Northwest Missouri State from 2011-15, earning All-MIAA honors and serving as a team captain as a senior in 2015. He started 15 games and helped lead the Bearcats to an NCAA Division II national championship that season. During his playing career, Sherman helped his team compile a 50-5 record with two national titles (2013, 2015) and three consecutive league championships (2013-15).

Prior to joining the Hawkeye staff, Sherman was a defensive graduate assistant coach at New Mexico State for two seasons (2018-19), working with the linebackers.

Sherman served as a defensive graduate assistant at Northwest Missouri State in 2016 and 2017, working with the defensive line, linebackers, and special teams.

Sherman earned his bachelor’s degree in corporate recreation and wellness in 2016 and his master’s degree in applied health and sports science in 2018, both from Northwest Missouri State. 

A native of Crete, Nebraska, Sherman attended Crete High School, where he earned Super-State honors as a senior while leading the Cardinals to an undefeated season and a Class B state championship.

Sherman and his wife, Crystal, have a daughter, Alayna.
