The Iowa women’s tennis team finished the first day of the Furman Invitational with a chance for a fifth-place finish in doubles and Hilary Tyler winning her first round in singles.
Freshman Tyler won her flight five singles match against Grace Blakely of South Carolina, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. She will compete against Furman’s Jacqueline Eckert tomorrow.
In doubles play, Hillary Mintz teamed up with Tyler for flight three doubles. After losing the first round, they came back to win their second match, 8-3, against Katelyn BeVard and Lindsay Downing of Penn State. The Hawkeye duo will compete tomorrow morning against Wisconsin’s Teresa Gonzaga and Lexi Goldin for fifth place.
In other doubles competition, Gloria Okino and Hilde Jansma lost two matches in flight two. Both fared no better in singles competition, with each losing in the first round. Jennifer Hodgman was defeated in flight two singles by Maria Brito of Clemson.
The Furman Invitational will continue tomorrow beginning at 9:00 a.m. (ET).
