Hawkeyes End Season With Win

Oct. 31, 2004

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa Field Hockey team finished the regular season with a 5-2 win over the Southwest Missouri State Bears Sunday at Grant Field. The game was Iowa’s senior day, as Sarah Dawson, Tammy Leister, Margot McMahon, Lauren Stiver and Barb Weinberg all played their final games at Grant Field.

The Hawkeyes were paced by Dawson and junior Debbie Birrell, who each scored two goals. Dawson leads the team with 33 points on 12 goals and nine assists.

Stiver kicked off the scoring on senior day by converting her fifth penalty stroke of the season. The Hawkeyes took a 2-0 lead just 1:10 later when Birrell smashed home a rebound on a penalty corner shot for her first goal of the game.

Dawson picked up her first goal of the game at the 17:09 mark when she tipped in a penalty corner blast from Heather Schnepf.

The Bears wouldn’t roll over, however, and picked up a goal by Gabby Gomez just over three minutes into the first half. Birrell then re-gained Iowa’s three-goal lead five minutes later with her second goal.

Dawson’s second goal came at the 53:28 mark with a nifty 1-on-1 move on the endline. SMS scored to cut the lead to 5-2, but it was too late.

Iowa (11-6, 5-1) will be the No. 2 seed at the Big Ten Tournament next weekend in Evanston, IL. The team will open with No. 7 Northwestern Friday at 10 am CT.
